How it Works

GPSmap units are a little different than the fitness devices to which most of us have become accustomed. One of the biggest differences is seen immediately when the device is turned on. As soon as the device is turned on, it locks into a signal quickly and starts tracking . . . no start/stop button needs to be pushed. Another major difference is they way it records information. There are 3 sections where data is recorded; Tracks, Routes, Highway.

Tracks

When the device is set to "Tracks", trackpoints are recorded and stored much like the fitness devices. The device intuitively drops trackpoints along your course as you make your way on your hike. These trackpoints are stored in an active track log and can be saved to the device as a "saved track" for future navigation of the same track. Once you've saved the track it's best to erase the active track log so the active memory is freed up to track new activities.

Save Your Track

  1. From the Tracks icon, select SAVE

  3. Save the track log
  4. If you select YES, the entire track will be saved

  5. If you don't want to save the entire track log, select NO at the prompt

  6. Select the beginning point of the track

  7. Select the ending point of the track

  8. Your track will be saved for future navigation

Delete your Track Log

While many people like to keep the history on their devices, it's best to delete the history once it's been uploaded to MotionBased and saved as a Saved Track to make room for new data.

  1. Select Clear from the track log screen

  2. You will be asked if you're sure you want to do this

  3. Select Yes
  4. The Track Log is deleted

Navigation

Now that you have a saved track in your device from your own hike, or you've downloaded a track from the TrailNetwork, it's time to navigate. Navigating a saved track is actually pretty simple. You select the saved track, open the map view and follow the track that was completed before.

Routes

A route is a series of Waypoints that mark location only. These points have no time stamp behind them. With a route you can navigate to a specific point/series of points at a later date. To mark a waypoint, press "Mark" on the button pad on your device. To navigate at a later time, press "Find".
