Battery
Make sure you have enough battery power for your activity before you start. You should get 10 hours on a fully charged Forerunner 205/305 or Edge 205/305, 12 hours on a fully charged Forerunner 301, 14 hours on a fully charged Forerunner 201. Keep your device plugged in when not in use to ensure a full charge.
Turn it On
Turn your GPS device on several minutes before the start of your activity to ensure you're locked into a strong signal. The longer you leave the device to lock in, the stronger the signal will be. Leave your device on a static (STILL) surface while it acquires satellite reception. Devices can be very sensitive to movement and will take longer to lock into a signal if worn on your arm or a moving bicycle while it warms up.
- It will take at least 5 minutes to acquire a signal the first time you turn on your device.
- It will take up to 5 minutes to acquire a signal if you've moved locations by over 100 miles.
The Workout
Start/Stop
There is one button for both functions. Make sure you're hitting the Start/Stop button at the right times. In general, you'll only need to hit the Start/Stop button twice since your device will Auto Pause if you're at a stop light, need to make a pit stop, or run into a friend and want to chat for a moment. For best results you'll want to upload your data to MotionBased after a few workouts.
Reset
The Reset button is also the Lap button. Be sure to hold down the Reset button for a count of three to store your last workout and get the device ready for a new one. If you neglect to hold the Reset button long enough, you'll be surprised by some very odd laps, with no separate workouts upon your upload.
Do Not Reset the Forerunner 201
Until you've uploaded your activity to MotionBased, do not Reset the 201. Please note that as soon as you hit the Reset button, any previously stored activities on the Forerunner 201 will be reduced to 250 track points. So, if you go for a long run or bike ride that collects 1,500 track points, the Forerunner 201 will reduce the track points for your activity to 250. This is not nearly enough for MotionBased or any other software to properly analyze. To give you more perspective, a 45-minute activity usually acquires 250 track points. So most activities longer than 45 minutes will be compromised if you hit Reset. So, if you can help it, do not hit Reset until you've uploaded to MotionBased.
