Heart Rate Preferences

From MB Wiki

Configure your Heart Rate preferences as they appear througout MotionBased. These settings are seperate from the heart settings on your Garmin GPS device. This allows you to expand the boundaries of the limited Heart Rate configuration available on the device.

Note that these Heart Rate Zone configurations will not be reflected on your device. These zone configurations are designed purely for analysis at MotionBased.

1 Heart Rate Preferences FAQ

Activity Type

Heart Rate Training is extremely activity sensitive. Because max heart rate and heart rate zones vary by activity, we give you the option to assign these heart rate metrics to specific activity types. The default setting will be applied to all activities, unless you begin to edit by activity type.

Max Heart Rate

Enter your max heart rate for each activity type, and we'll take care of the math. Of course, you can modify our suggestions for each zone to your liking.

Determine Your Max Heart Rate using the Karvonen Formula
220 - Age = Maximum Heart Rate Max Heart Rate - Rest.
Heart Rate x Intensity + Rest. Heart Rate = Training Heart Rate

Beginner or low fitness level . . .50% - 60%
Average fitness level . . . . . . . . 60% - 70%
High fitness level . . . . . . . . . . . 75% - 85%

Example: I am a Average fitness level and want to perform in the 65% range. My resting heart rate is 69 and I am 31 years old.
220 - 31(Age) = 189(Maximum Heart Rate) 189 - 69 x .65 + 69 (Rest HR) = 141(min) - 147(mod) - 153(max) (Training Heart Rate)

Zone Units

Choose whether you want to customize your heart rate zones using beats per minute (BPM) or % max.

Zones

By default, we display 5 Heart Rate Zones based off a Max Heart Rate of 185. You may customize the following fields associated with each Heart Rate Zone:

  • Zone Name
  • Zone Range (change the Floor and Save, then the Ceiling will automatically change)
  • Zone Color (to be displayed in charts and maps)

In order for changes in Zone Name or Zone Range to take, you must click on the "Save" button at the bottom of the table.

You may also add or remove from the 6 default zones presented by MotionBased.

Heart Rate Preferences FAQ

How do I change my Heart Rate Units?

To change your Units from Beats Per Minute (bpm) to Percent of Max Heart Rate (%max) or Heart Rate Zone (zone) go to "Account," then "Units." You'll see the second choice is "Heart Rate Units." You can then change your preference so it shows on the Heart Rate section of the Dashboard.

What happens to the heart rate data for activities imported from a Training Center History (TCX) file?

Just like the heart rate data received from a device, MotionBased receives the heart rate data but not zone information. Once your heart rate preferences are saved on MotionBased, they are applied to all imports and uploads. (Remember, you should only import your Training Center History once!!)
