What is a wiki?

A wiki is a great way to share information amongst the community. A wiki is a content pool that anyone can freely edit. Similar to a forum where everyone can post information, the wiki allows you to edit and create pages as needed...essentially building a website with ease. Unlike the Forum where new posts are created or messages are appended to other messages, the wiki integrates everyone's messages into a single flowing document as if we were all editing a Microsoft Word document instead of sending emails to each other. What results is more structured readable information than would result from postings on a forum. MotionBased has decided to start using a wiki to improve our communications with our customers about how to use GPS and MotionBased successfully to track your workouts and outdoor activities. As most of you know the process can be complicated at times, but very rewarding so using a more structured format to share information is extremely important. Maybe you are wondering why you are being asked to help write documentation? The reason is: We think you know our software just as well as us, and we highly respect your point of view! MotionBased is a community of enthusiastic people that love the outdoors and like to use the Internet to share information. Often times as the developers of a website we see things differently and have trouble communicating features the way the rest of the world sees it. As with most software you will probably experience a few bugs or problems along the way. Send customer support an email and we can answer it and sometimes we can't. Once we all figure out the problem that knowledge stays with us, but is not shared easily amongst the community. For instance the other day the Agent was not able to communicate with MotionBased since Windows was blocking communication. I was not able to determine what the problem was since he had disabled the firewall and spyware programs. He replied later in an email explaining it was his Internet Explorer Proxy settings that was causing the problem. If he could have posted that information directly to the community everyone else could benefit from the effort he put in to get past the problem. Who better to tell us how to get past the problem than the person that did the troubleshooting?

Current purpose

As stated in MB Wiki:Policy , MB Wiki currently serves 3 distinct roles:

1. A place to define and discuss the MotionBased software
2. A place to describe and discuss GPS and GPS Units as they relate to MotionBased. (See what this wiki is NOT below)
3. A place to share tips, comments, opinions, stories and essays (success or not) about people: including but not limited to trainers, athletes, coaches, recreationalists, and outdoor enthusiasts, who are using MotionBased, GPS, and Location Based Services in general.

What MB Wiki is not

Almost all Wikimedia wikis have a 'What this Wiki is not' page, whose intent is to exemplify inappropriate content for that site.

1. MB Wiki is not an authoritative place to define GPS, GPX or other international standards of measurement. It is ok to comment on them however.
2. MB Wiki is not a hosting provider for personal essays of all types.
